The Sacred Legend

The Story of Baba Shyam

॥ बाबा श्याम की पवित्र कथा ॥

Understand the divine legend of Barbarika — why he is worshipped as Shyam, and why Khatu is a place of unparalleled faith.

Who is Baba Shyam?

Barbarika — The Grandson of Bhima

Barbarika was the son of Ghatotkacha and the grandson of Bhima — one of the five Pandavas. From birth, he was extraordinarily powerful and a devoted warrior. He had received three magical arrows from Agnidev (the fire god), each with the power to alter the outcome of any battle.

He was so formidable that just his three arrows could alone end the entire Mahabharata war — in a single moment. He had taken a vow to always fight on the side of the weaker party, which would have made the war unending.

The Three Arrows

Barbarika received three infallible arrows from Agnidev. The first could mark everything he wanted to destroy; the second, everything he wanted to save; and the third would destroy everything not marked to be saved — making him an unstoppable force in any battle.

The Supreme Sacrifice

Lord Krishna, in disguise as a brahmin, asked Barbarika for the greatest gift possible — his head. Recognising Krishna through divine intuition, Barbarika offered his head willingly. His severed head then witnessed the entire Mahabharata war from a hilltop, by Krishna's boon.

👑

Krishna's Boon

Pleased by Barbarika's supreme devotion and sacrifice, Lord Krishna blessed him — declaring that in the Kali Yuga, Barbarika would be worshipped across the world as Shyam, a form of Krishna himself, and would fulfil the sincere wishes of all devotees who came to him.
